Dattatreya Moola Mantra
Lord Dattatreya is an important deity in the Hindu religion. He is considered to be the manifestation of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva combined. The Shri Dattatreya Dhyana Mantra or meditation Mantra is recited to seek the blessings of Lord Dattatreya. Chanting of this mantra also helps to calm one’s mental state and prevent nervousness.
ॐ गुरु दत्ता नमो नमः
Om Guru Datta Namo Namaha ll
By chanting the Name of Shri Dattatreya, the ancestors entrapped in Martyalok gain momentum. Thereafter, depending on their karma they advance to progressively higher regions. Thus, automatically the trouble caused by them to their descendants on the earth reduces.
By chanting the Name of Shri Datta in Pitrupaksha(The dark fortnight of the Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapad, when rites are performed for the deceased ancestors), the onward sojourn of the ancestors is faster. Hence, during this period, chant for atleast six hours (or seventy-two malas) daily. In general, it is best to chant Datta mantra 11,108 or 1008 times by facing ein east direction.
The best time to chant this mantra is during sunrise or sunset. One can use Lord Dattatreya’s photo or yantra and should sit facing east while chanting this mantra. The rosary bead (japa mala) should be made of Tulasi (basil), Rudraksha, or clear quartz crystal.
The Sadhaka can offer candies and anything sweet such as pongal – rice boiled with milk and sugar as the naivedyam (food offerings) along with flowers.
Lord Dattatreya is the embodiment of the Holy Trinity consisting of Vishnu, Lord Brahma, and Shiva. He thereby has the combined characteristics of the Trinity. He is considered as the Guru of all Gurus. This incarnation of the Protector, the Creator, and the Destroyer is said to be very kind to his worshipers and bless them with all they need.(Dattatreya Mantra)

Dattatreya or Sri Datta is a Hindu deity encompassing the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, collectively known as Trimurti. The name Dattatreya can be divided into two words – “Datta” and “Atreya” referring to the sage Atri, his physical father.
Once Brahma-Vishnu-Maheshwara went to Anasuya (wife of great sage Atri) requesting alms. When she agreed to do so, they asked her to serve the food without wearing clothes. Since appearing naked in front of other men will reduce her Pativritya (devotion to her husband), by the power she had she made them children and then breastfed them. These children, then became Soma (Brahma), Vishnu (Dattatreya), Shiva (Durvasas) and then Dattatreya stayed with his parents and considered as Trigunatmaka (containing the character of Trinity, Brahma-Vishnu-Maheshwara).
Various Hindu sects worship him differently. In the Nath tradition, Dattatreya is recognized as an Avatar or incarnation of Shiva and as the Adi-Guru (First Teacher) of the Adinath Sampradaya of the Nathas. Although Dattatreya was at first a “Lord of Yoga” exhibiting distinctly Tantric traits, he was adapted and assimilated into the more devotional Vaishnavite cults; while still worshiped by millions of Hindus, he is approached more as a benevolent god than as a teacher of the highest essence of Indian thought. However, spiritual seekers pray to this Supreme Teacher for knowledge of the Absolute Truth. Dattatreya is credited as the author of the Tripura Rahasya given to Parasurama, a treatise on Advaita Vedanta. He is specially worshipped on his birthday, Datta Jayanti.
